December 2019 Community Journal

By Serpentius

Salutations Elyrians!

December was a crazy month for a variety of reasons. Let’s go over what transpired in this shorter-than-normal last month of the year in our recap below.

A look back:

  • December 2nd was the last day to purchase Premium and Standard Longest Night calendars as our Black Friday/Cyber Monday 20% off sale ended. Congrats to all of you who got your premium calendars!
  • Never having been shown before, these Erishé character models were a hit! If you missed it, check out these discoverable tribe screens shared by none other than the Spider Queen herself.
  • It was a busy week, but that didn’t stop Snipehunter from sharing new concept drawings and artwork on Elyrian Souls made by Heat.
  • The Settlers of Elyria event launched but did encounter a hiccup after its initial debut. While still being worked on for re-release, you can view the original announcement about it here, as well as review the event FAQ.
  • Our final shiny of this short month (it was short due to American holidays that the studio celebrates) was all about scary and glowy! Check out the Sailfin in this final shiny of 2019!
  • With the postponement of the Settlers of Elyria event, we posted an update thread to keep everyone in the loop about our progress towards restarting it.
  • Finally, knowing the holiday was upon us and wanting to ensure we set your expectations, we posted a final Settlers of Elyria event update before the break.

Studio additions!

In December, Ash Kain joined us as Producer. In his most previous roles he has worked on Camelot: Unchained and also Star Citizen. You can find him in Discord under the handle “Kain”.

In January, two new members joined the team. First we welcome CortanaV to the team as our new UX/UI designer! She previously worked on Destiny through to Destiny 2, and Shadowkeep, to name a few. You can find her on our official Discord server in blue as “CortanaV”.

Next we added a senior UI artist to our team of merry developers. His previous accolades include Halo Infinite and start to finish efforts on Halo 4 and 5. He’s logged into our Discord server as “Mokume_Hada”.

If you see any of them participating in chat make sure you say hello!

About name reviews

We receive domain name and surname reservations seven days a week. For a variety of reasons, we receive and still process between 50-100 names a week and we don’t see that slowing down anytime soon.

Normal response times are between 2 to 5 days, but due to the holidays we’re a little backed up. We anticipate getting the lists cleared within the next week or two, so thank you for your patience!

Random Memes

Each month, we'll spotlight a few random memes that were shared via the forums, Discord, or Reddit.

Sanguinesh really wanted us to understand what his favorite midnight snack will be once in Elyria :

Rhysith had this Marvel-ous interpretation of a Souls image the studio recently released:

Thank you to everyone who shared their memes with us. Whether funny or not, we appreciate your submissions and know humor is wildly subjective.

If you'd like to see your meme highlighted, share it with us in our Discord, forums, or our subreddit, and it may show up here one day!

Ask a Dev

A new column in the Community Journal, this section will highlight and provide answers to interesting questions submitted to us by the community.

Here is this month’s question submitted to the form below:

Baron Shield asked:

Q: "If tribes could use knowledge (meta knowledge, not obtained in-game) in order to understand how to 'treat and utilize' ironwood. Kypiq closely guard this knowledge, in-game, but does the character require the knowledge in-game in order to utilize that knowledge?"

Snipehunter replied:

A: "Absolutely - in Chronicles of Elyria we make a strong distinction between what you know, and what your character knows. Mostly this is done to make sure that things like looking up a recipe online won't create an in-balance where one player has to go through in-game means to acquire information while another just looks it up and bypasses a ton of the effort that was meant to be involved. However, treating character knowledge the way we do also means that you will need to take your character out into the world to learn the things you want your character to know. Even as a Kypiq character, you won't simply be "born" knowing how to treat Ironwood. (Unless you spark into a Kypiq artisan who has already learned the secret, of course!) Instead, you will need to seek out an NPC with the knowledge and convince them to teach you their secrets. Good luck!"

If you would like to submit a question for the Ask a Dev column in hopes it will get answered in a future Community Journal, use this form.

Moderators

(Formerly the Meet a Mod column)

Our volunteer Moderators are not only bastions of peace in our community; they are a helpful hand whenever you need assistance.

They are very knowledgeable about Chronicles of Elyria and provide valuable feedback that helps keep our community amazing.

Each month in the past, we provided a little insight into who they are and what makes them tick.

All current moderators have been interviewed, look to previous Community Journals to learn more about them!

More about Mods

As you may already know, our volunteer Moderators and Super Moderators spend countless, often tedious hours supporting and helping the community to ensure peace and happiness across all of our platforms.

In December, aside from trying to take a break for the holidays, the moderator team continued providing feedback on the Soulbot project to further refine our custom bot, and we started delving into statistics on our server and how they can help us make this community even better.

If you ever want to talk to a Moderator, you can find them in the forums with a Moderator title, or in our official Discord server in purple (Moderator) and gold (Super Moderator).

Becoming a mod:

If you have an interest in becoming a Moderator for our team, please, don't call us, we'll call you! There is no application process; we constantly seek out capable, kind, considerate, helpful, and supportive individuals who have a reputation in the community of being upstanding players who are honest and have integrity. If that sounds like you, and you are present in our community, keep up the efforts! We'll find you!

Meet an Organization

Each month we spotlight an organization from our community.

We have many creative members who are building amazing groups in Elyria, and this is one way we can help bring them to your attention.

Today, we introduce you to the Wissenheim Institute of Technology, shared with us by their Headmistress Argyn.

Official Organization name: Wissenheim Institute of Technology
Server: Angelica (NA-W)
Kingdom affiliation: Blackheart
How did you form? "The school formed after seeing a gap in the current atmosphere of CoE. Although many well-known and great schools exist, much of the community lack real-world educational institution experience and felt we might be able to add something to the conversation. Additionally, most of our community have dreams of pushing the research and technological advancement aspect of CoE to the extreme and felt a school/institute would best support these lofty goals.”
Tell us about the leadership: "Wissenheim Institute of Technology is run by several real-world professors, teachers, educators, administrators, and researchers, interested in creating a simulated institute at the forefront of knowledge acquisition and academic rigor and as such strive for a major shift from the more mundane and traditional educational centers planned for CoE."
Organization purpose: "We aim to advance knowledge and educate students in science, technology, and other areas of scholarship that will best serve the kingdom and all of Elyria today as well as the days to come. The institute is committed to generating, disseminating, and preserving knowledge, and to working with others to bring this knowledge to bear on the kingdom’s and world's greatest challenges. Additionally, we are dedicated to providing our students with an education that combines rigorous study and the excitement of discovery with the support and intellectual stimulation of the community. We seek to develop in each member of the community the ability and passion for working wisely, creatively, and effectively for the betterment of mannkind and defense of the realm."
Motto/Slogan: "Scientia Praesidium Regnum (Knowledge, the Guardian of the Kingdom)"
Fun Fact: "The school was founded (at least on paper) prior to the settlement in which it will be located and thus the vast majority of the settlement's leadership will be the members on the board of regents for the school."

Thanks Argyn for giving us a better understanding about your organization!

Thank you for reading these interviews, I hope you found them as informative and interesting as we did conducting them.

Meet a Dev

To help you get to know our team better, we try and interview one developer each month, or as often as is possible.

This month, we talk to Cullen, also known online as Lio DeBeer, a senior gameplay programmer at the studio working on Chronicles of Elyria.

Q1: At what age did you first get into technology and why?
A1: ”I started programming seriously in my early twenties. I decided I wanted to try making video games, so I should probably learn some skills.”

Q2: Are you self-taught or did you go to school to learn engineering/coding?
A2: ”I am self-taught. I went to school for civil engineering, and was fortunately able to make a pivot to game development after college.”

Q3: Rumor has it you like very salty black licorice, how did that happen?
A3: ”I bought some while on a trip to Sweden to let my kids try it, as a joke, and we all wound up liking it.”

Q4: Any other food tolerances you have that some might find interesting or unusual?
A4: ”I eat a lot of hot sauce? That’s not that interesting really…”

Q5: We know you have quite the beard, how long have you been growing it?
A5: ”About 12 years? It’s my wife’s fault. She got tired of me not shaving regularly, and suggested I just let it grow out.”

Q6: Favorite movie and why?
A6: ”My old answer to this was always Cannibal Holocaust. It’s a beautifully made, brutal film that really captures how ugly humanity can be. Maybe I’m in a good mood today though, so I’m going to pick Sing Street. I grew up in the 80s playing in some bad bands, and that movie really resonated with me. I think that might make an interesting double feature. Kind of captures the full range of human experience.”

Q7: What are you working on right now at the studio?
A7: ”Implementing the traversal mechanics.”

Q8: What was the first programming language you feel you “mastered”? Why did you learn that language?
A8: ”C++ (although I wouldn’t claim to have mastered it in an interview). It was the only real choice for making games back in the day, and arguably still is.”

Q9: What mechanics or concepts in Chronicles of Elyria are you most excited to work on (not play)?
A9: ”The economic simulations, AI, and story engine. Anything that will bring out the living/changing world elements of the game.”

Q10: Why did you decide to join the team here at Soulbound Studios?
A10: ”The opportunity to work with a small team on a game that we own. You don’t find that very often in the game industry these days. COE also presents some very interesting challenges you don’t always find in the average game dev job.”

Q11: What would you say is the most difficult engineering task you’ve ever had to execute on?
A11: ”Maybe creating the AI for a sci-fi aerial combat game? Had to develop tools to analyze arbitrary 3d levels with various tunnels and obstacles to create nav data for pathfinding, and then make the AI able to fly various aircraft using that data.”

Q12: If you could say anything to the entire community right now, what would that be?
A12: ”Thanks for all the support. I really value all the trust you have put in our studio, and will do everything I can to get you a game that meets your expectations, hopefully in a timeline people find acceptable.”

Thanks Cullen for helping us understand a little more about you, glad to have you aboard!

  • Work continues on the core CoE game, as the Prelyria client continues to see work done in all of the areas we’ll need for initial testing to begin
  • RP enhancements to our Discord server that have been in the works will finally be realized!
  • After SoE is out, our next big project will be the Organization Faire with Personas. Look for an update on this in the future!
  • Caspian’s highly anticipated annual update blog the “State of Elyria” will be forthcoming once the Settlers event is underway.

Welcome to 2020!

I've been paying money into the development of this game for approximately three years. I'd like to know if there's any light at the end of the tunnel. When can we expect Caspian to give an approximate start date for trials and eventually a date for opening day for the game?

@Cullen, aka Lio DeBeer, sweet! Would you be willing to expand a bit on how this task was similar to what supposedly is going to happen in CoE when trying to create the nav mesh required for parkour? Are you assigned for that, or is somebody else going to implement it?

@Kyleran

("My guess is they are hoping to draw in a new crowd of followers who might be willing to throw in some money, so don't expect them to comment on, apologize for or even acknowledge any sins of the past, there is no profit from such actions at this time.")

This statement is not only false, but also an attack on the studios credibility, Because I have seen Caspian ( Jeremy Walsh ) Do all of the below !! (1) comment (2) apologise & (3) Acknowledge.

I would suggest you do your research before making such false statements in public and making yourself look like a complete Tool.

You've got links to Jeremy admitting he was lying or greatly mistaken in his estimating back during the Kickstarter when he promised to deliver the game in 2017?

Then again, after the 1st revision for the end of 2019 delivery was never going to happen he admitted he was wrong again?

If so, please share.

I am saying he never has nor ever will admit such things as being deceitful or badly mistaken, whether true or not, nor do I believe it is in his best interest to do so.

But this is going way off topic for this thread so if you wish to continue the discussion on whether or not I am making false statements or continue with your name calling feel free to create a new thread and we can thrash it out.

However, stepping down to my level rarely goes well for others.

Trouble is, they said the same last year, and the year before that as well.

Understandable why some remain skeptical at such claims.

Understandable why some remain skeptical at such claims.

Then the problem is people come out with the same line. "But this year will be different, trust me!".

Chronicles of Elyria is going to be the game of a generation!

Well, I mean, not our generation. We'll all be dead before it releases, but some generation will experience it!

Barswain - 1 month ago

@Oracle, for you to say any one that is impatient has zero grasp show you have zero grasp on what’s being asked. A lot of the “impatient” people are not asking for the game to be release today or even a playable alpha client, what’s being asked is for progress updates besides napkin doodle artwork. Every year we here how things are moving along and yet SBS can never really show that due to.......?? And these request for progress are from some fictional realm they are request based off Caspains information on how well things are going. The last line of your post says “Elyria is shaping up well”, based on what? The latest failed event? While to the white knight rescue team any request for progress due to the lack of updates might seem like haters gonna hate, people asking for progress are still here and wanting this to move forward...just asking for some proof that it is. Want to know why people have high expeditions and expect more to be shown?

Welcome back and thank you for this extensive and in-depth CoE review of the past, present, and future. Wishing everyone a wonderful and successful 2020. You have lots of friends, and I have no doubt that you will be very successful.

Nice to see things moving along.

As always there are unfortunately a number of impatient community members who quite literally have zero grasp of the scale of work involved in software development. Those following closely would have seen the superb demos at the gamers events. We've seen various clips, screenies and new content too.

The biggest issue and likely reason for reducing the volume of what is shown to the community is likely the people who are constantly complaining about it, so you can thank yourself for that if you're one of them.

CoE employs heavy community engagement. However, software development is iterative, and "getting it pretty" is a relatively small part on the end of that process. Where increasing the exposure of the "It ain't pretty" skin and bones of the development would show a large number of us how the game is actually moving along: First, it would take up more of their time doing so. Second, those of the community who love nothing more than complaining and spreading bad PR would likely take that content and pitch it as the finished product and damage support for the game.

So there we are. Elyria is shaping up well, but for those of you who are truly dedicated complainers, we have you to thank for the reduction in general transparency. Still, for those who have been watching closely, Elyria is certaiy still moving along.

Anatar is getting a lot of hate on here but on the subreddit let it be known that any "positive or creative" posts concerning CoE can't reach 10-15 upvotes consistently in the last couple months. While memes created by him or things showing short comings of SBS and what not of a more negative tone have four times the average in upvotes. (Sometimes much more)

He may be upsetting the subreddit mods (Looking at you Mickdude and Neuro) but at least his memes, as well as others such as Zeek / Huldric (before he disappeared) even, are creating traffic for the subreddit that as stated, CLEARLY hadn't been remotely as high before. Hell I literally started using it only recently because it was dead and boring as hell before and I saw some funny memes being posted.

Without those dudes that shout-out concerning the subreddit activity wouldn't have been possible.

That burst in reddit traffic going bye bye now that those reddit mods banned any decent meme. Dont act like theres suddenly a huge influx of interest in the game. People want the salty memes.

Decent? Ohhh that's rich! You guys aren't even trying anymore, just go back to the "Is this a pigeon?" dude for a while til you learn how to meme again. ;)

Seriously folks, if you know how to make relevant, high-quality memes, you are desperately needed on COE Reddit. (Review the rules, first!)

It's been almost 2 years since Caspian said the Pre-Alpha was "ready to go" (May 22, 2018), then canceled it (May 18, 2018) right after the money-raising event ended that ran during the months he hyped the Pre-alpha was ready.

20 months have passed since then and we are still shown Nothing. 20 months have passed since then and we have been told Nothing. 20 months have passed since then and still, we have Nothing.

Ah Violet to the rescue with more bland, general information but nothing of substance. YES...you are correct they did state the pre-alpha exist, also water is wet. The pre-alpha has supposedly existed for years now but thats all anyone can every say about it. Whats the progress.......?????? Maybe you missed Melkars post (https://chroniclesofelyria.com/forum/topic/34541/refund?page=2#16) that dug up all the old state of elyrias. Guess we will get another post this year that talks about the trials and tribulations of the process and more grand claims about how they have re-invented the wheel where no other studio could so the process is going to take less time, and still no progress will actually be shown.

Huldra Draco - 1 month ago

Cullen... why have i never heard of this person before?? lol Nice to see some info on devs that arent in discord as well, as those tend to be the only ones we hear about hehe. And wow, that post must have taken you ages to write, Serp, its a mile long! XD

VioletWinterlynn - 1 month ago

Its current state is in Pre-Alpha, which they highlighted saying that "as the Prelyria client continues to see work done in all of the areas we’ll need for initial testing to begin"

It didn't honestly look that hard to say as it was part of the post.

As for the StoE post, its been stated for a while now that it will likely take place after the start of SoE, its being highlighted officially on this post. So thats another update on that.

Why is Caspian’s delayed “highly anticipated” state of Elyria tied to the broken Settlers event? We already know you guys threw that dart and didn’t hit the board. If we are waiting on a failed event to be fixed before the 2019 state of Elyria post, it will be 2021 before it comes out...I joke but probably June 2020.

Why is it so hard to say where the company and state of the game is currently?

Yeah I had also expected to see the state of elyria post before the soe event kicked up again. Mostly to give us something now, not in a few weeks/month later. This is most disappointing.

I can understand the frustration with this and eagerly await the State of Elyria too, but I feel like Caspian and the studio are stuck between a rock and a hard place.

From here, no matter what they do, what they focus on first and what they release first, there are elements in the community that are going to bitch and complain about the "other" thing not being ready and released.

I can't help but feel that they have messed up (which they admit to) but can't seem to catch a break when things do go well.

edit there is probably many things that go well, which the community as a whole is not privy too, thus producing a bias in perception towards the negative

What “other thing” is more important than getting our hands on pre Elyria ? Spending more money or bringing MORE of our friends In to this silly settlers event to give them more money?

Color me queer but I like to actually PLAY the game I invested 350 dollars 3+ years ago into , and for some reason any time any truth is said that damages COEs name the downvote squad comes out as if it really has any impact on the words we say .

It’s clear by the amount of upvotes these community journals receive now A days that we are sick and tired of getting the run around . We devoted our money , time and faith into this project and all these devs can do is ignore us , sweep us under the annoying mods wings that don’t know Jack about what’s going on , and continue to sell things while they break web hosted events that shouldn’t be able to be broken and need rewriting so easily .

Somethings up , it’s either deceitful or in the very least they bit off more than they can chew and don’t know how to tell us . 4 months until 2 year mark delay . That’s almost unheard of for a delay of such a small stage of the overall game , if it was delay for the final release for years it’s understandable , but with an ever growing team and more money than they had previously - a 2 year delay on the earliest and tiniest stage of the game seems ridiculous !

I have to ask, what outcome are you hoping for were they to answer your questions.

Were they to now admit to being deceitful or over their heads previously, it likely would damage future backer support and funding, which could well lead to the end of everything, yes?

My guess is they are hoping to draw in a new crowd of followers who might be willing to throw in some money, so don't expect them to comment on, apologize for or even acknowledge any sins of the past, there is no profit from such actions at this time.

After all, many of the current backers probably have reached their spending limits, so keeping them happy isn't nearly as important as catering to a potential group of newcomers...

Assuming they show up of course.

You're wrong about that. Setting aside the ethics, what future investors or backers would give money to a studio that disregards the interests of its financial supporters?

It's their ability to deliver on their promises that matters most. Do that and you don't have to venture into the ethical quagmire of which set of supporters you want to screw over first. Going down that road is the first sign of serious failings and likely the beginning of the end for the project.

I dunno, seems to me Robert Industries has almost completely set aside the promises made for the originally envisioned single player game as promised in the initial Kickstarter, yet SC raked in over $50M in funds this year, with a high percentage of it coming from new backers.

CU and CF both started as crowd funded efforts but it's pretty clear now both teams are considering the desires of their investors first, with backers a definite 2nd.

Not saying SBS is doing such BTW, but recent statements such as plans to revise the web site to be more new player friendly clearly shows they are seeking to expand interest and funding from new blood, which is a smart thing to do.

Doesn't mean they will burn their bridges behind them, as long as it is beneficial for them not to.

I wouldn't get too twisted over ethics when talking about game development, big AAAs like EA have been operating without much concern for quite awhile yet continue to make money hand over fist.

From my understanding, how Caspian talked last year about the delay on SoE. Didn't seem like he could really do that much, as in, there are better people to fix the issues with it.

So seems simple to me. Get the right people fixing whatever is wrong around SoE and get Caspian to finish off the State of Elyria post.

While I understand Caspian could very much help with the event. From my view, seems sharing with everyone what is going on with the game. Could give everyone some much needed confidence in the studio again. May help people drop more money on the event as well.

Good Edit :) I was just about to go in on that comment. I do want to say though regarding another "Community fluff thing" It's prob not the comms we're really after. I'm assuming most want to know what is going on with D&SS and...the entire "game". Maybe talk about that a bit more.
